60 Years of Drive-In on the Same Lot

Long before Gus ever fired up a grill at 3131 Main Street, it was already serving food to people in cars. In the 1960s, it was an A&W Root Beer - frosted mugs, gravel lot, tray-on-the-window service. Wisconsin was A&W country, and the East Troy stand was a fixture on Hwy ES (Main St), the old road that connected Beloit to Racine before the interstates came.

When the A&W closed, the building cycled through several locally loved establishments over the following decades. The names changed. The business of feeding people off the road never did.

That's the thing about this magical spot: it's always been a drive-in. The lineage is unbroken in spirit - six decades of the same American ritual of pulling off the road for a burger, a shake, and a few minutes of nothing-to-do.

A Crossroads Worth Stopping At

East Troy is a village of roughly 5,600 people in Walworth County, built around one of the few true central village squares in Wisconsin - a National Historic District dating to the 1850s. It's stayed itself for 170 years. That's rarer than it sounds.

Gus's sits on Highway 20, the old road that connected the region before the interstates came. It's always been a road to somewhere worth going.

The East Troy Electric Railroad runs just up the road - the last surviving segment of Wisconsin's once 200-mile interurban network, operating since 1907. Dinner trains, pizza trains, Christmas trains. About 25,000 visitors a year.

Alpine Valley Music Theatre sits five miles away - the Grateful Dead played it 20 times, Phish 26, the Rolling Stones three nights in a row. On show nights, Highway 20 fills with music fans from three states, and they all pass this corner.

Lake Geneva is 15 miles south - the classic Chicago summer escape, 20 minutes down WI-120. Gus's is the natural last stop on the way down from Milwaukee, and the first reward on the way back up.
